Ararat is a city in the South West of the state on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley. Once a gold rush boomtown, it also became a city of asylums, and is now the site of the Hopkins Correctional Facility. This is an agricultural production area with wool, beef, and wine driving the local economy.
The Grampians National Park and local wine industry is the drawcard for local tourism with attractions including Ararat Regional Art Gallery, Mount Langi Ghiran winery, tours through Aradale (Australia's largest abandoned 1800's lunatic asylum) and the Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre.
The city's main community festival is known as the Golden Gateway Festival and has run since 1958 when it was set up to commemorate the city's centenary. The Jailhouse Rock Festival (since 1994 a retro 1950s themed festival) are two major festival
events in Ararat.
Excellent free camping is available at the nearby Green Hills Lake.
