Information
Kununurra is the main population centre of the East Kimberley and is considered the gateway for tourists to this remote and intriguing ancient region. Kununurra is located on the Victoria Highway, 1057km east of Broome and over 3000km from Perth. Four well-known tourist routes converge on the town centre, namely the Gibb River Road, Great Northern Highway, Victoria Highway and Wyndham Road.
Nearby sites of interest are Lake Arygle, Lake Kununurra, Ord River, Mirima (Hidden Valley) National Park.
Kununurra history is rather recent, having only been established in the early 1960's as a service town to workers involved in the construction of the Ord Irrigation Scheme. Once the Ord River was dammed, this opened up the area to horticulture, aquaculture, and tourism and the town now has a population of around 6000.
Aboriginal history in the area revolves around the Miriwoong (Miriuwung-Gajerrong) people.
