Every town has its own story, with links to the past and a vision for the future. Springsure's story began in the 1860s with the arrival of new settlers filled with hope and dreams of farming vast fertile plains. As new settlers took up pastoral runs, the growing need for supplies prompted carriers with horse-drawn wagons transporting goods all the way from the east coast to the Gulf of Carpentaria. A stopping point along this inland route became a permanent spring near the present day Minerva Hills National Park, discovered by an Irish traveller who apparently announced to all 'there are springs here for sure!' By 1863, survey pegs were hammered in and the township of Springsure was born.
