PUT A PLUG IN IT! The sticky trachyte lava sometimes slowed inside the vents where it cooled and hardened into a solid plug, just like a cork in a bottle. Dillies Knob is a typical volcanic plug. The resistant trachyte plug now juts out of the collar of the softer basalt rock, which has slowly washed away.
