Tardun Townsite - WA

Site of the township of TardunTardun was a typical railway town, growing up around the siding on the Wongan Hills - Mullewa line in the 1920s and 30s.. The old tavern and shops over the road, and the hall (several hundred metres to the north) are the only remaining structures in the settlement itself - but not far out of town stand two much more substantial institutions.The Christian Brothers' Agricultural School (CBAS) was established about 15 km north of here in the mid 1920s as a training institution for boys from the Clontarf and Castledare homés in Perth. The architect-priest, Monsignor John Hawes, designed the majority of its elegant buildings in 1936/7. From then onwards the "biggest school in the world" on its 18,000 hectares of farmland, provided a unique educational opportunity for hundreds of children right through to its closure in 2009.
