The cricket ground and tennis courts nearby were the centre of attention most weekends back in Tardun's hey-day. Players and spectators congregated around the hall that stood here for nearly 90 years, until it was destroyed by Cyclone Seroja on April 11, 202l.
Funded by local subscriptions, the Tardun Hall was opened on August 26th, 1932. In addition to accommodating the welcome afternoon teas provided for hungry sportspeople, it has hosted church services, weddings and wedding receptions, dances, Christmas trees, first aid classes and all kinds of meetings.
Tardun was a busy little village in the period between the 1930s and 1970s. In the early years there were as many as 26 houses in town, and after the war immigrant families working on the rail gang were housed in tents opposite the store. There were two bakers in town, a butcher, a mechanic's workshop - and then of course there was the store, which was the hub around which the community revolved. It sold everything from groceries to windmills - and if it didn't have what you wanted it would get it for you. In its later years it became a tavern and as such was the meeting place for farmers from far and wide.
