The Tanami Road, is undergoing a long-term project to seal its 1,035 km length, with initial sections near Halls Creek already completed. As of late 2024/early 2025, approximately the first 40–41 km south of the Great Northern Highway intersection in Western Australia has been sealed, with further, ongoing construction. Current Status and Upgrades (WA Section - Halls Creek):Progress: The first 40 km of the 313 km WA section, starting from the Great Northern Highway, is sealed.Future Works: Work on Stage 2 (the next 32 km south of Ruby Plains Homestead) will recommence in March 2026, aiming for completion by the end of 2026.Long-Term Plan: The full sealing of the WA section is a 10-year project funded by state and federal governments to improve access to remote communities and mining operations.
Road Conditions: Despite the upgrades, most of the road remains unsealed dirt, sand, and heavy corrugations, requiring a 4WD.
