Oberon is the highest town in the Blue Mountains region sitting at around 1120m above sea level. It is a hard working community and has one of Australia’s lowest unemployment rates. Oberon was proclaimed a village in 1863 and since then has grown to a resident shire population of over 5,000 people of which half of those live in the town itself.
The main rural industries in this town include prime lamb and beef cattle with brussel sprouts, broccoli, potatoes and peas being the main horticultural industries. Timber is also processed and it sources the raw material large pine plantations in certain NSW State Forests and private forest growers.
Oberon has good shopping amenities, including restaurants, cafes, takeaways, butchers and bakeries to name a few and it also has most professional trade services. There are many camping grounds in the shire and accommodation ranges from hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, self contained cottages, farmstays and caravan parks.
