Perched between Rainbow Beach and Noosa within the Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park, Double Island Point is a striking sand-spit headland that looks like two small islands from the sea—hence its name, given by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770. For the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) people this area has deep cultural significance, long serving as a place for fishing, gathering and ceremony. The heritage-listed lighthouse, first lit in 1884 and now solar powered, still guides vessels along this stretch of coast. Today the point is a favourite for 4WD adventurers, surfers, and visitors keen to spot dolphins, turtles and migrating whales.
Getting There:
• From Noosa: Access via the Noosa North Shore ferry, then follow the beach north past Teewah and the Coloured Sands (tide-dependent, 4WD only).
• From Rainbow Beach: Drive south along the beach from the main township past Leisha Track (or take Leisha Track itself) to the headland (also tide-dependent, 4WD only)
2.2km return to top Grade 3 (allow 1 hour walking).
